Summary
Dysphagia and aspiration are frequent symptoms affecting seniors. Dysphagia is also associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is also often associated with dehydration, malnutrition and increased risk of aspiration pneumonia. The prevalence of malnutrition among patients with dysphagia can reach 50%. Increased frequency of dysphagia in elderly is particularly associated with an increased incidence of stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment is needed to eliminace the cause of dysphagia. Nutritional support is an essential part of the treatment.
