Summary

Laryngocele is a cystic dilatation of laryngeal ventricle which communicates with laryngeal lumen. The disease is rare, often asymptomatic and benign. It can also manifest as an acute obstruction of the respiratory tract with the necessity of an urgent tracheostomy. We can divide laryngoceles into internal and mixed. The old classification of laryngoceles into internal, external, and mixed is incorrect, because the existence of an external laryngocele is anatomically impossible. Diagnostics is difficult and symptoms are usually non-specific. Patients are often treated for different diseases of the larynx and a proper diagnosis is assigned only in the operation theatre. In this publication, we focus on the latest trends in the diagnostics and treatment of laryngoceles. We also present the treatment results of patients with laryngocele at our hospital.
