Summary

Nearly every individual at least once in their lives is affected by an episode of back pain, which often subsides spontaneously. However, in more than half of these cases, the problem becomes chronic. Chronic back pain is a serious health problem, not only in specific case of an individual, but also due to the number of cases of incapacity for work and its duration, society wide. More than 80% of cases of back pain are non-specific pain, i.e. pain without an obvious patho-morphological finding, or pain whose character and intensity does not correspond to the finding detected by imaging techniques. The causes of non-specific back pain are multifactorial. Besides some minor structural findings in the spine or pelvis and psychosocial aspects, so-called motor control disorders are expected to play an important role in the development and chronicity of these problems. These disorders can be objectively assessed in clinical practice by specific functional motor tests. This assessment may help to choose the appropriate therapeutic procedure and can also be helpful in assessing the efficacy of the indicated therapy. The aim of this article is to inform about motor control disorders in patients with non-specific low back pain, possibilities of their evaluation in clinical practice and a brief overview of therapeutic techniques that can effectively help to solve them.
