Summary
Surgery is often associated with fear and anxiety. The aim of research was to assess the preoperative fear in patients before elective surgery. The other aim was to compare differences in rating fear according gender, age, type of surgery and previous experience with surgery. Research sample involved 322 patients before elective surgery. Eight items questionnaire SFQ (Surgical Fear Questionnaire) was chosen to measure fear before surgery. The higher fear was reported from surgery and anesthesia. The greater fear had older patients, female and patients with previous negative experience with surgery. The higher level of fear was recorded in patients with major surgery. Statistically significant association has been found between pain and preoperative fear.
