Summary
Social issues go hand in hand with the ageing of population. Seniors with psychiatric disorders are at higher risk of loss of autonomy, social exclusion and phenomenon of loneliness as well as lower quality of life as compared to their mentally healthy peers.
Subjects and methods:
Observational study focused on social background of seniors admitted to psychogeriatric ward at the Mental hospital of Kroměříž, and discharged from this facility between the compared years 2003 and 2013. Method: study of medical records in electronic form.
Results:
The most common social background of seniors with psychiatric morbidity admitted to our facility both in year 2003 and 2013 was a house or apartment owned by the senior, followed by retirement home for seniors or nursing care facilities. When discharging our senior patients, the situation changes non-significantly – lower numbers of seniors return back to their homes and higher numbers of them enter social care facilities. In year 2013 new phenomenon appears among seniors with psychiatric disorder being admitted into psychogeriatric ward – shelters and social housing have nowadays become an increasingly social background for these seniors.
Conclusion:
Shifts in social background among seniors with psychiatric disorders can be seen between the two chosen years, separated by a ten year period. Further verification on larger sample is needed, ideally at a national level.
Key words:
seniors – ageing – functional heterogeneity – seniors with mental disorders – social problems in elderly
