Summary
Streptococci cause a wide group of infectious diseases. A development of an illness depends on pathogen´s virulence and actual status of patient´s imunity. The number of invasive streptococcal infections is gradually growing in eldery patients. It is caused by higher incidence of other risk factors (chronical internal diseases, imobility, immunosuppressive conditions etc.). Prevention of pneumococal infections by vaccination is often neglected. In reported case the combination of two risk factors (age about 65 and splenectomy) led to primary pneumococcal menigitis.
