Summary

Peptic ulcer disease and its complications are significant health problems among the elderly. Despite the decreasing prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in population, the incidence of ulcers and bleeding is stable. The reason may be in a broad use of potentially risky drugs and comorbidities. The diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection is indicated in peptic ulcers, gastric intestinal metaplasia and atrophy, in relatives to persons with gastric cancer and in other situations. Eradication antibiotic therapy should be considered carefully in view of risk and benefit particularly in the elderly.
