Summary
The article focuses on the current system of postgraduate training and the length of the training program in geriatric medicine in individual countries of the European Union. Further, it summarizes competences of the geriatrician and the general internal medicine specialist in the care for older, polymorbid and frail patients and suggests new roles for specialists in geriatric medicine in European health care systems.
