Summary
Many factors influence the perception of one’s personal dignity. Our goal was to determine the influence of selected demographic and clinical factors on the assessment of the dignity of older adults at the end of life in the individual domains of the Patient Dignity Questionnaire (PDI-CZ). The group consisted of 231 older adults (mean age 77,2 ± 10,3 years; 141 (61,0 %) women; 128 (55,4 %) had oncological diagnosis). The influence of age on the evaluation within the individual PDI-CZ domains was not confirmed. Gender correlated with “Loss of autonomy”, where women had significantly worse scores. Education influenced the evaluation in the domain “Loss of social support”. Older adults with higher education rated higher. Social situation influenced the assessments in the domains “Loss of meaning of life”, “Loss of autonomy” and “Loss of social support”. In these domains, older adults living with a partner rated their dignity the highest. The influence of cancer diagnosis was confirmed in the domains “Loss of meaning of life” and “Loss of certainty”, where the older adults with oncological illnesses rated significantly lower. There was also a difference in the assessment in all PDI-CZ domains of older adults in the different types of care facilitieses.
