Summary
The case report presents an unlikely cause of acute onset dysphagia in a geriatric female patient – myasthenia gravis. Both the course of the disease as well as diagnostic procedures and ultimately fatal complications are described. Myasthenia gravis affects mostly working-age population, leading to disability in some individuals. If diagnosed in elderly patients with early bulbar and respiratory symptoms, the prognosis is far worse. It is a chronic autoimmune condition associated with fluctuating muscle weakness and fatigue. To establish the diagnosis, a careful assessment of patient’s history followed by neurologic examination, stress tests, detection of serum auto-antibodies and electromyography must be made. Myasthenia gravis treatment is long-term with the goal of clinical remission.
