Summary

Anaplastic thyroid cancer is a rare undifferentiated thyroid malignancy found in elderly patients in most cases. The authors are presenting 16 patients (female-to-male ratio was 15:1) with histologically or cytologically proven diagnosis of undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma treated during a period of 13 years (1994-2006). The age related distribution was 27-90 years. Most patients (10 from total 16) were aged 62-79 years. 12 patients underwent an operation. According to pTNM classification one case was in T4N0M0 group, 7 cases in T4N1M0 group, 3 cases in T4N1M1 group and in 5 patients the pTNM classification was not accomplished. The survival was calculated from the time of histological or cytological diagnosis and ranged from 5 days to 14 months. The largest number of patients (10 from total 16) died during a period shorter than 2 months. The mean survival in dead patients was 3.53 months. From the entire group only one female patient survived, 6 years at present. The mean survival of all patients is 7.81 months currently.

Key words:
anaplastic thyroid cancer, total thyroidectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy.
