Summary

Smoking during pregnancy is not only a serious health hazard for mother and developing fetus, but also increases the risk for higher morbidity in childhood and adulthood. Although these consequences of prenatal exposure are well documented, many pregnant women do not want or cannot stop smoke. Decisions about smoking cessation and successful abstinence are influenced by many individual, social and environmental factors and by the grade of dependence. While some women spontaneously stop smoke, other needs the psychological and pharmacological support. Behavioral intervention and motivation are the safest way. Nicotine replacement therapy is recommended only for those who would continue to smoke. Varenicline and bupropione are not suitable due to lack of knowledge about their influence on fetus/infants. Alternative methods (acupuncture, hypnosis) have inconsistent efficacy. Medical care in antenatal offices and/or prenatal courses offers the unique opportunity for repetitive anti-smoking intervention.
