Summary
Both chylothorax and pseudochylothorax belong to the group of pleural effusions with high lipid content. They are rather rare and represent about 10 % of the whole spectrum of pleural effusions. Macroscopic appearance of chylothorax and pseudochylothorax is typical, but identification of etiology is very difficult, because both can be induced by numerous conditions and diseases. This review article deals with description, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis and treatment of chylothorax and pseudochylothorax with emphasis on the causal and symptomatic treatment depending on the primary cause.
