Summary
The authors report the outcome of a clinical study on the topical use of a broad-spectrum antibiotic (levofloxacin) in the prophylaxis of post-operative endophthalmitis. One hundred and four eyes (of 104 patients) that underwent cataract surgery at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Hospital, Hradec Kralove, were studied. No peri- or postoperative complications were observed, there was no case of postoperative endophthalmitis in this group and topical levofloxacin was well tolerated by all patients without any allergic reaction. Based on our results we recommend the topical use of levofloxacin 0.5 % drops in combination with steroids for the prevention of post-operative endophthalmitis.
