Summary
For most clients, moving into a home for the elderly is associated with a loss of opportunities to look after themselves. In addition, the range of tasks and activities that employ hands and upper extremities is reduced. The aim of our study was to determine the impact of a six-month movement intervention program on the level of independence in daily activities and on the manual dexterity of elderly people. The tested sample was a group of 33 people, 5 men and 28 women, aged from 65 to 93. All of them are inhabitants of a home for the elderly in Brno. We assessed the independence in older adults by the functional independence measurement (FIM), and the manual dexterity through a test of manipulation functions, using the constructional set “Ministav”. The results of the control measurements show an improvement in the level of self-sufficiency in the daily-life activities that were tested, improvements in washing and bathing were shown to be statistically significant. The intervention program improved the level of manual dexterity in the coordination of limbs in the operation and planning of manual operations, as well as the quality of various types of grips and targeted movements, and the grip strength and cognitive functions were also positively influenced.
