Summary
The article is the first within a series that is aimed at reviewing some findings from the field of psychotherapy that are relevant for clinical medicine. In the first article, the concept of embedded counselling in medicine is introduced with its main principles. A common factors model in psychotherapy is then discussed, as it is presumably applicable in medical practice with regard to both process and outcome of collaboration between patient and doctor. Most attention is given to the therapeutic relationship – an essential factor in embedded counselling. Recent findings from psychotherapy research on the therapeutic relationship are included.
Key words:
psychotherapy, embedded counselling, common factors, therapeutic relationship.
