Summary
Back pain is a frequent reason for visiting a primary care physician. Challenge of a primary care physician is to identify the small group of patients with the axial spondylarthritis (mostly known as ankylosing spondylitis) among the great numbers of patients with chronic back pain. Recognition of the inflammatory back pain seems to be a useful clue to identify an axial spondylarthritis. The following article shows the features of an inflammatory back pain. HLA-B27 positivity is the other suitable parameter for referral a patient with back pain to a rheumatologist. Age and duration of a back pain are the additional essential conditions.
