Summary
Background and aims: Timely detection of geriatric syndromes makes it possible to formulate care plans and to provide comprehensive management of these syndromes and high quality care for older persons. The study is based on the presumptions that as the population ages globally, the need for nursing care in nursing homes increases, and that the increase in multimorbidity and the number of clients with geriatric syndromes makes such care extremely demanding. The research objective was to ascertain whether and how the structure of clients aged 80+ in Pohoda nursing home changed over a five-year period (2014–2018).
Methods: The data were obtained from client medical records; for each year, the clients were randomly selected (n=50); the research sample included 250 clients (52 men and 198 women). The age of the clients, multimorbidity, geriatric syndromes of incontinence, particularly of the 3rd degree, of hypomobility and of cognitive deficit were entered in the record sheets. Care allowances and stays in a nursing department were determined as well.
Results: It was found that during the study period, there was a statistically significant increase in multimorbidity and the prevalence of geriatric syndromes of incontinence and cognitive deficiency; mobility remained unchanged. There were also increases in the numbers of persons receiving 3rd and 4th degree care allowances and clients staying in the nursing department.
Conclusion: The study showed an increasing rate of geriatric syndromes and need for more intensive nursing care for clients in nursing homes.
