The connection of anal and cervical HPV infection in high risk women

Summary
The infection by human papillomavirus (HPV) causes the development of several cancers. More than 99% of the cervical cancers and 90% of the anal cancers are associated with HPV infection. There is some connection between the cervical and anal HPV infections. Women with cervical HPV infection, cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer, are at increased risk for the anal infection and the anal cancer. According to the results of our study, the prevalence of anal HPV infection significantly increases with the severity of cervical lesion. Concurrent cervical-anal infection was observed in nearly half of women with severe cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and microinvasive cervical cancer. It was more than 5-fold more frequent than in the control group.
