Summary
Breast reconstruction can reduce the trauma of breast cancer patients caused by mastectomy. The process of reconstruction can be initiated at the time of mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or later (delayed reconstruction). For most breast cancer patients in the Czech Republic an immediate reconstruction has not been available so far. An immediate breast reconstruction program has been started at Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute since 2007. Till now, 77 patients with breast cancer have underwent the surgery. We use two-staged aloplastic method with tissue expander and silicone implant. Based on the preliminary data it is not possible to draw conclusions regarding oncological safety of the procedure or the patient´s satisfaction. We suppose our results would not differ from those generally presented. Despite of our effort, the demands of all appropriate patients cannot be satisfied. We believe that working teams in other hospitals will follow us. This would certainly be facilitated by concentration of breast cancer patients to specialized breast units or centers.
Key words:
alloplastic breast reconstruction – mastectomy therapeutical – oncosurgery – breast cancer – immediate breast reconstruction
