Summary
The anterior cruciate ligament is the most frequently damaged ligament in the knee. A result of this damage is the instability of the knee joint usually solved by operation, with the use of the patellar or hamstring tendon graft. A graft has to undergo three phases of intra-articular healing and graft-to-bone incorporation after surgical reconstruction. During the healing process the graft changes its biological and mechanical properties which are summarized in this article. The understanding of the remodeling process and incorporation to the bone, depending on the type of graft, fixation technique and graft tensioning, is important for the improvement of surgical technique and rehabilitation to achieve the full restoration of the graft.
