Summary

Strokes are frequent and serious diseases. They are second and third the most frequent causes of death in developed countries, in Czech republic, they are the second most frequent cause of cardiovascular diseases and in the last years, they represent 6% of all deaths. The goal of this research was to determine the influence of rehabilitation treatment on the improvement of patient’s independence and self-sufficiency, and to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation intervention on the level of functional disability after ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke and to compare the results using the FIM test.

The sample group included a total of 34 patients, whose average age was 77.8 years (SD ± 10.3), 17 women and 17 men. In order to determine the effect of rehabilitation on the individual types of stroke, the sample group was further divided into a group of 26 patients (average age of 78,7 years, SD ± 10,3) diagnosed with ischemic stroke and a group of 8 patients (average age of 74,9 years, SD ± 10,4) who suffered hemorrhagic stroke. The initial examination was carried out before the onset of the patients’ rehabilitation treatment and the final check up was conducted on the day that the patients were released to either go home or to continue further treatment in another institution.

The statistical analysis was performed in Microsoft Excel 2003. The results show that undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation leads to greater levels of functional independence and to improvements in self-sufficiency as well as basic daily activities in post-stroke patients. The results further prove that patients who had suffered ischemic stroke reached better results in the motoric and cognitive scores in the FIM test than patients who had suffered hemorrhagic stroke. This leads to a conclusion that hemorrhagic stroke has more serious consequences for patients than ischemic stroke.
