Summary
The authors present the case of a patient with chronic osteomyelitis of the calcaneus. They wish to communicate the dangers of the development of septic shock from chronic osteomyelitis. They stress the need for immediate radical treatment, particulartly in this case subtotal calcanectomy, to prevent sepsis. Conservative antibiotic treatment and repeated debridment of the bone are insufficient. On the other hand, prior to treatment it is necessary to consider the age of the patient, his social backround, his job and his patient compliance. Partial calcanectomy or in the last resport amputation handicap the patient severely but save his life. The authors acknowledge with gratitude their cooperation with prof. Zwipp, chairmann of the Traumacentre of the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden who helped them to solve the case of a patient with chronic osteomyelitis of the calcaneus. This case had an influence on treatment of the fractures of the calcaneus in their department.
Key words:
