Summary
The article focuses on the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). MRI plays a major role in the diagnosis of MS; it is the most important paraclinical test and is irreplaceable in detecting the activity of the disease. Standard techniques used for MS monitoring are presented in the article, such as lesion load and brain atrophy, together with the new criteria. Briefly discussed are unconventional MRI techniques, such as magnetization transfer, diffusion-weighted imaging, perfusion-weighted imaging, functional MR imaging, relaxometry and magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
Key words:
multiple sclerosis – magnetic resonance imaging – diagnostic criteria – atrophy – magnetization transfer – diffusion-weighted imaging – perfusion-weighted imaging – functional MR imaging – relaxometry – magnetic resonance spectroscopy
