Summary
Aim of study:
The study was aimed to detect and characterize pati ents with restless legs syndrome (RLS) using questi onnaire. Subjects and Methods: Study sample included 555 persons who were recruited in a waiting- ro om of a ne urological o utpati ent clinic. Participants firstly filled a bri ef questi onnaire aimed to collect demographic data and than responded to fo ur specific questi ons, i.e., essenti al criteri a for RLS according to the Internati onal Restless Legs Syndrome Study Gro up. If respondent answered positively all fo ur questi ons, he/ she was classifi ed as probable RLS- sufferer. Consecutively, he/ she completed a second part of the questi onnaire, appli ed by he alth care professi onal. This part was ori ented to confirmati on and particular RLS descripti on. If respondent did not respond positively all fo ur di agnostic questi ons, he/ she was classifi ed as negative in relati on to RLS. Results: Criteri a for clinical di agnosis of RLS were fulfilled altogether by 23.4% of respondents (men 18.1%, women 26.5%). Thirty five per cent of RLS- sufferers referred daily occurrence of RLS symptoms. RLS begun in average age of 45.7 ± 16.1 ye ars, and it persisted 8.6 ± 8.2 ye ars. Sleep disorders ca used by RLS were referred in 58 % of RLS- sufferers. Famili al occurrence of RLS was reported by 41.9 % of pati ents. RLS- sufferers were gre ater he alth care consumers in parameters: 1. number of medicaments, and 2. number of visits of physici an in last three months. Conclusi on: Detecti on of pati ents with RLS by me ans of simple questi onnaire, e. g. during waiting for clinical assessment or tre atment, is very effective appro ach applicable in a bro ad medical practice.
