The relationship between tin­nitus intensity and the degree of sensorineural hear­­ing loss from the aspect of contribution of hyperbaric oxygen ther­apy

Summary

Tin­nitus is a clinical­ly and pathophysiological­ly heterogeneous symp­tom which incidence shows an increas­­ing trend. Hear­­ing loss has been identified as the most relevant etiological factor in the development of tin­nitus. The aim of our study was to verify the nature and extent of the relationship between sudden hear­­ing loss and tin­nitus after the application of hyperbaric oxygen ther­apy (HBOT). We proces­sed data of 99 subjects who were treated with HBOT within the primary (n = 63) and secondary treatment (n = 36). The initial range of hear­­ing impairment was monitored in patients with sudden hear­­ing loss with cur­rently dia­gnosed tin­nitus (HL + T) vs. without tin­nitus (HL). There were no statistical­ly significant dif­ferences in the initial hear­­ing impairment between these two subgroups HL + T and HL in the sample of patients treated with the primary treatment. In the group of patients with secondary treatment, there was a statistical­ly significant lower hear­­ing loss at the frequencies of 500 Hz and 1,000 Hz (p < 0.05) in HL + T individuals (n = 18) prior to initial ther­apy compared to the HL group (n = 18), resp. After the use of HBOT primary treatment, there was a statistical­ly significant improvement in hear­­ing (p < 0.01) and intensity of tin­nitus was reduced (p = 0.05) in the whole HL + T group. There was no significant improvement in the group of patients who received secondary treatment. There was a moderate cor­relation between tin­nitus and hear­­ing loss after the termination of HBOT only in patients with primary treatment (R = 0.43). We can conclude that HBOT can, to a certain extent, therapeutical­ly influence a variety of factors that modulate tin­nitus and hear­­ing los­s.
