Summary

This summary explains the complex relationship between insomnia and neuropathic pain (NP) at both neurophysiological and psychological levels. It is focused on the possibilities of synergic action of the first line methods in therapy of insomnia and NP. In the first part we define basic terms such as „neuropathic pain“ and „insomnia“ and explain their mutual relationship between both clinical syndromes. The review focuses on the complex therapeutic approach covering both these clinical units. Attention is given to cognitive behavioral therapy (as the first treatment choice for chronic insomnia), and to pregabalin and gabapentin (both drugs being the first treatment choice for NP). Both of these therapeutic approaches are complementary: cognitive behavioral therapy has shown to have positive effects in NP treatment, while pregabalin and gabapentin proved to have potential of improving sleep.

The authors declare they have no potential conflicts of interest concerning drugs, products, or services used in the study.

The Editorial Board declares that the manuscript met the ICMJE “uniform requirements” for biomedical papers.
