Summary

In this paper, the authors review the history of Geriatrics in the Czech Republic and reflect on the last year‘s developments. Geariatrics were not included in the list of the main speciality areas at the beginning of 2009. Fortunately, this situation has quickly been corrected and Geriatrics remains one of the main specialty areas of medicine. In addition, ‘Long‑term Care Medicine’ has been established as a postgradual specialisation. The authors remind the readership that Czech (and Czechoslovak, respectively) Geriatrics have been concerned with issues the importance of which goes beyond the boundaries of the country and that are among the priorities of an international, though so far undervalued significance.
