Summary
The article reminds the twenty fifth anniversary of discovery of the etiological agent of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) - the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It surveys retrospectively several periods in the field of molecular virology and HIV infection epidemiology, and closely related therapeutic procedures. UNAIDS WHO facts clearly document that the catastrophic pandemic is by far not solved and its spread, mainly in developing countries is a global challenge for the entire world. Numbers of HIV/AIDS patients in the Czech Republic are so far low, the care is concentred into regional AIDS centres. However, even in our country an important increase in HIV infected persons is observed in past two years, which reflects global trends in the world. The pandemic of AIDS cannot be mastered without adequate preventive measures, where a support of the state plays an important role, sufficient financial resources, and an international cooperation.
Key words:
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), antiretroviral therapy, preventive measures.
