Summary
Hospitalization is very risky for geriatric patients s because it carries the risk of worsening their self-sufficiency due to loss of muscle mass and muscle strength. There are many instances where the patient is not able to return to his natural enviroment, to his/her home. The aim of long-term care should be to restore the same physical condition the patient was in before acute deterioration of health. This flows from the definition of long-term care. To achieve this aim, high quality rehabilitation is necessary. It has been proven repeatedly that movement therapy with good diet reduces the risk of losing self-sufficiency in these patients.
The aim of this work was to find out what the real situation in facilities which provide long-term care is. Our investigation shows that the situation is unsatisfactory, in particular because of lack of personnel. Some facilities do not even have their own physioterapists, only an option to partly share rehabilitation workers with the rehabilitation department. It is necessary to improve health care professional awareness of the importance of excercise and rehabilitation for hospitalized patients and create conditions for improving the quality of rehabilitation in long-term care departments.
