Summary
Abdominal obesity is a result of the ectopic fat depositi on in the visceral regi on associ ated with severe metabolic consequences. It is a requirement (in an older definiti on, a component) in the di agnosis of metabolic syndrome, the major risk factor of cardi ovascular mortality. Abdominal (central, andro id) obesity can e asily be identifi ed from waist circumference me asurement and sho uld not be overlo oked as it indicates significant metabolic abnormaliti es and the need for tre atment
Key words:
abdominal obesity – metabolic syndrome – insulin resistance
